What is fish roe?

A traditional food from the sea

Fish roe are the eggs of female fish before they are laid. In many coastal cultures roe has always been part of the diet: as tarako in Japan, as taramas in Greece, as salmon caviar in Russia. Fresh roe, however, is hard to come by, perishes quickly and is not to everyone’s taste.

Our fish roe capsules contain roe from wild-caught hoki, gently freeze-dried and processed into powder. Six capsules correspond to 3000 mg of roe. No preparation, no taste and no other ingredients apart from the capsule shell.

Information about Fish Roe Capsules – Freeze-Dried Wild-Caught Roe, 180 Capsules

About the product

Fish roe is one of the most original foods from the sea. Our fish roe capsules contain roe from wild-caught hoki, freeze-dried and filled without any other ingredients into a beef gelatine capsule.

What is hoki?

Hoki is a sea fish from the hake family. It lives in the cool waters of the southern hemisphere and is wild-caught. In Europe it is known as a food fish mainly as fillet. Its roe is used for these capsules.

Roe in traditional diets

In many coastal cultures roe has a firm place in the kitchen, from Japan to Scandinavia to the Mediterranean. In the 1930s, the American dentist Weston A. Price described how several traditional peoples he visited particularly valued fish roe. In the modern diet, by contrast, roe has become a rare delicacy.

Why freeze-dried?

For freeze-drying, the roe is first frozen. Then the water is removed under vacuum without heating it. What remains is a shelf-stable powder that can be dosed precisely and stays neutral in taste in the capsule.

Fish roe, fish oil and krill oil

Fish oil and krill oil are oils extracted from fish and krill respectively. They contain only the fat fraction of the raw material. Fish roe capsules take a different approach: they contain the whole roe, just dried. It is a food, not an extract.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is fish roe?

Fish roe are the eggs of female fish before they are laid. Well-known examples are sturgeon caviar, salmon caviar or taramas made from cod roe. Our capsules contain freeze-dried roe from hoki.

Which fish does the roe come from?

From hoki, a wild-caught sea fish from the hake family. It lives in the cool waters of the southern hemisphere.

How many capsules do you take per day?

Six capsules a day, for example three with each of two meals. Six capsules correspond to 3000 mg of roe. One tub of 180 capsules lasts 30 days.

Can you taste the fish?

The roe is sealed in a capsule as a powder, so you do not taste it when swallowing, unlike fresh roe.

How is it different from fish oil?

Fish oil is an oil extracted from fish and usually refined, so it is only the fat fraction. Fish roe capsules contain the whole roe, just dried. It is a food, not an extract.

How is it different from krill oil?

Krill is a small crustacean from which an oil is extracted. Our capsules, by contrast, contain whole fish roe. People allergic to crustaceans should avoid krill oil; fish roe contains the allergen fish.

Who are the capsules not suitable for?

For people with a fish allergy. As the capsule shell is made of beef gelatine, they are also not suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Why freeze-dried?

Freeze-drying removes water from the roe at low temperature without heating it. This keeps it close to its natural state while making it shelf-stable for a long time.

Is fish roe an organ product?

No. Roe is not an organ but the eggs of the fish. It belongs to the same NUTRIEST range, however, and follows the same approach: whole foods, freeze-dried, with no additives.
